A-1-6 > BW_New_5-3: (Note from Bill Wendover 6/27/08) SFC Finnis Dawson McCleery (TX). This is a picture of Sgt. Mc getting a haircut at LZ Gator. To this day I wonder what the barber found to cut? This was taken just before deployment North to Lo Giang. 1st Plt Sgt Robert Van Horn had recently been detached to the Chu Lai training center for replacements. With the Horn temporarily gone it was great to have Sgt. Mc assigned to 1st plt., A Co.through the infusion program. I had to infuse a lot of good men that had been in our unit for a long time. In this instance we got back as good as we lost. Sgt Mc was first 3rd squad leader then acting Plt Sgt. When Van Horn showed up out of nowhere on the battle field at Lo Giang he took a round in the knee and we lost him Sgt. Mc stepped right in as permanet Plt Sgt. After I rotated to a Bn job Sgt. Mc was quite often the Plt. Leader. as well.
A-1-6 > BW-79: Gary Stading (CA, KIA 25 April 68) sitting, TJ Williams (CT) in shades standing, Joseph Bruggeman (NY), Robert 'Doc' Norman (LA) sitting, Alan Allen (TX) sitting, Sgt. Finnis Dawson McCleery (TX, MOH winner), on a C-ration break in the bush. McCleery was both Platoon Sargeant and Platoon Leader at times, as 1st Platoon often did not have an officer
A-1-6 > BW-15: This photo taken while Lt. Bill "Wendy" Wendover was XO after the battle at Lo Giang(1). Pay-day in the field at a resupply site high in the mountains. It was Wendy's last day in the field as a Gunfighter. The E-5 on the right is a replacement to Co. A after Lo Giang(1) ...?, Burl Hill (TX), Mike Maney, Sgt. Finnis McCleery, ????
A-1-6 > BW-13: Gunfighters in line for pay-day in the field. That's Sgt. Finnis Dawson McCleery in the rear, Bill Griffith tongue-in-cheek, and Alan Rhinehart with the cigar.
A-1-6 > JL02: Sgt. Finnis D. McCleery, left, and Lt. James Love, both of 1st Platoon, reminisce about the good old days. Love traveled from Michigan to San Angelo, Texas to visit with McCleery in April, 2002. McCleery, earned the Congressional Medal of Honor on Hill 352, May 14, 1968, in South Vietnam. He was born in Stephenville, Texas, and
died in June, 2002
A-1-6 > AR-32 Essentially, this photo is the same as the first photo in this collection, with just a slight change in poses. Members of 1st Platoon, posing just after receiving Purple Hearts are: Sgt. Sherwin Hall (CA), squad leader, Sgt. Finnis McCleery (TX), platoon sergeant, Lt. Jim Love (IL), platoon leader, and Alan Rinehart (UT), rifleman; sitting are John 'Chunky' Carlson (NJ), rifleman, Tony Cordia, rifleman, and Mahlon Fegley (DE), rifleman. This photo was taken several days before Hill 352 (Nui Hoac Ridge), where McCleery won the Medal of Honor. Fegley says he was wounded on 4/29/68, and again on 5/14/68, after which he was MedEvaced to Japan for a month. That means he would not have been around after Hill 352 to pose for a picture, and he doesn't remember ever having his second PH pinned on him.
A-1-6 > AR-9 Company A takes a break on the trail. That might be Sgt. Finnis McCleery on the left.
