Read MoreLM90: All slicked up and waiting in Cam Ranh Bay. We were waiting to board a bus to the “Freedom Bird”. I (Lou Miller) was dropped off at the Chu Lai Airport two days earlier. At Chu Lai, as my ride pulled away and I walked into the terminal, I was told all flights were cancelled. There would be no incoming flights due to a typhoon about to hit Chu Lai. When the typhoon hit, the roof of the terminal started to peel off. People were going out the two doors located north and south on the east side of the building. A portion of the roof separated on the north side, flipped over and landed on some of the soldiers as they ran from the terminal. Two men were injured. I had gone out the south door. A flight came into Chu Lai at dusk and I made it to Cam Ranh Bay that evening. I missed my first flight because of the typhoon and was bumped off another flight home because they gave my seat to some Officer. We now had to wear new kaki’s because the flight crews said we smelled.
