Read MoreLM15: 3rd platoon was strung out in a hedge row to the left of this photo, about 25 yards. Bob Vaught and I (Lou Miller) spotted this NVA who appeared to be tracking us. He was carrying an M-16. We were in the middle of the platoon so we jumped out onto the open rice paddy and began walking towards him. The dink was tracking from our right to left. At 50 yards I told Bob to shoot. He did and the NVA fell behind the dyke. Moments later he stood back up. I told Bob to shoot again and the dink fell down behind the dyke again. Bob and I were now only 25 yards away, out in the open, when the NVA stood up again. We could now see that Bob was hitting him in his left leg. This guy never even looked our way the whole time. This time I fired two shots and he fell again. The NVA didn’t come back up, but all I could think was that he would come up, but this time shooting. At 15 yards, I charged at him, not really knowing where he could be behind the dyke. My rifle was on auto and when I reached the dyke, I did a John Wayne on him as he was crawling away. L-R is Sgt. Evans, dead NVA and Bob Vaught. I got this NVA’s U.S. jeep tire sandals, his U.S. Marine cigarette lighter from Da Nang, U.S. p-38 can opener, nail clippers and homemade tweezers, all on a U.S. dog tag chain. Probably all off of a U.S. Marine.
